Article 1 September 2026 Insights Interview: Technology with Purpose Interview with Philip Healy on Technology with Purpose: Innovation that delivers better outcomes Tell us about your role and the areas you specialise in. I help clients tackle operational challenges by designing smarter FM solutions that deliver real results. My focus is on bringing together operational expertise, technology, data and AI to improve performance, reduce risk and create safer, more sustainable and efficient workplaces. 2. Why is Technology with purpose so important for our clients right now? Technology with purpose is about finding smarter ways to solve real business challenges. Clients are under constant pressure to improve efficiency, control costs, enhance customer experience and meet sustainability targets. By combining technology, data and AI, we can help them make better decisions, improve performance and unlock greater value. For example, using real-time data from connected assets allows issues to be identified before they become failures, reducing downtime, lowering costs and improving service reliability. What are the biggest challenges you see in this area day‑to‑day? The biggest challenge is turning a client’s specific requirements into a solution that delivers genuine value. Clients want greater efficiency, better experiences, stronger sustainability performance and lower costs, and all at the same time. My role is to bring together the right mix of people, processes and technology to create solutions that are practical, scalable and focused on outcomes, not just innovation for innovation’s sake. How do you and your team approach these challenges? We tackle these challenges through strong teamwork, a shared understanding of our clients’ goals, and a solution-focused mindset. We work closely across sales, operations, and SME teams to understand each client’s unique needs and develop practical solutions that deliver real value. Can you share a recent real‑world example where this made a difference? Recently, we worked with a client looking to move from a reactive to a more proactive maintenance approach. Rather than starting with a pre-defined solution, we take the time to understand what success looks like for the client and then bring together the right expertise from across Mitie. By combining operational expertise with real-time asset data, we helped improve visibility of building performance and identify potential issues earlier. This enabled faster decision-making, reduced disruption and supported a more efficient service delivery model. That collaborative, solution-focused approach helps us create practical solutions that deliver real value. It’s also a good example of how technology creates value when it’s aligned to a clear operational objective. From the outset, our focus was on understanding the client’s goals and bringing together the right people, processes and technology to achieve them. What’s one thing you wish more clients understood about this topic? I think one thing I’d like more clients to understand is that technology isn’t the end goal, it’s an enabler. At Mitie, our platforms, systems and data help us make better decisions, work more efficiently, and ultimately deliver a better service experience for our clients and their building users. We embrace technology in much the same way our clients do, as a tool to improve performance, visibility and outcomes. When combined with great people and strong partnerships, it helps create the conditions for long-term success and continuous improvement for everyone involved. What do you enjoy most about your work or what motivates you in this area? What I enjoy most about my work is exploring new systems, technologies and ways of working that help solve real-world challenges. It’s exciting to see how many of these innovations have been created to address a problem someone has previously faced and then turned into something that makes life easier for others. What motivates me is the opportunity to take a challenge, understand it properly, and then work with colleagues to find the best solution. To me, that’s how real progress happens; bringing together great people, fresh thinking and the right technology to solve problems and create better outcomes for clients.
