Mitie developed a lighting upgrade project with our national client to replace all lights in three of their largest administration buildings. This project formed part of our clients responsible and sustainable business strategy was part of their program to reach net zero carbon for their operations by 2030, which Mitie supported through a review of their real estate energy and carbon loading and to identify opportunities for improvement.

Mitie’s position as a leading energy and services organisation gave our client the support needed in achieving improvement on energy efficiency in respect to their electrical usage. It was clear to our client that in reducing energy consumption, LED should be considered as a minimum standard in all buildings.

The work was being completed in live working environments and so we had to ensure that we had pre-planned all work, locations and communications to ensure we had availability to the work areas, were not encroaching on our clients staff’s space and had an opportunity to clean up the areas in close proximity to where we were working.

Every light fitting in the three large administration buildings were changed to LED with no impact on staff working in the buildings. In total 4,223 light fittings were changed. Staff would leave at the end of their shift and return in the morning to their improved working environment.

The three buildings estimated energy savings are outlined below:

  • Admin Building One – Estimated Annual kw/h saving 387,198.61
  • Admin Building Two – Estimated Annual kw/h saving 253,338.96
  • Admin Building Three – Estimated Annual kw/h saving 302,440.70
  • Total estimated Annual kw/h saving 942,978.27

National Client: Vodafone
Timescale: The project took place over 4 phases in a period within a 4-month timeframe.

Mitie lead a new energy-saving project at the Vodafone HQ’s, to the value of €1.5 million. The 26,000-square meter facility is recognized as one of the most high-profile corporate office blocks in Ireland. The project Mite completed involved the upgrading of the entire lighting infrastructure of the building including: general lighting, feature and display lighting, emergency lighting and supporting infrastructure to facilitate the project. The project aim was to provide a uniform lighting solution across the headquarters, consisting of a lighting level of 350 lux at all times while also providing energy reduction of 1.2 million kWhrs. Another part of the project included the upgrading of the existing emergency lighting systems to the latest I.S. 3217:2013 standards

The new installation integrates into Vodafone’s Corporate Social Responsibility objectives to reduce their carbon footprint. Their staff have a wonderful work environment and that is now further enhanced by new modern, smart lighting system.

The new installation reduced energy consumption and green-house gas emissions with the utilisation of the very latest LED technology and smart controls, all the while providing the business with sustained savings for many years to come. The upgrade meets the lighting requirement of 350 Lux per office station. Verification analysis of the baseline showed a reduction of 70% on the lighting load. This equates to an annual energy save of over 1.2 Million kWhrs. From an environmental perspective, CO2 emissions at the headquarters were reduced by over 750,000kg’s (750 tonnes) per annum. Furthermore, given that the heat output from lower wattage LED lighting is considerably lower than that of the existing fluorescent and discharge (spotlights) type luminaires, a further energy reduction of approximately 255,000 kWhe (enough to electrify a further 48 households) was achieved annually in reduced air conditioning activity.

There is a maintenance guarantee on all new lighting fittings, resulting in a no maintenance, zero cost implication to Vodafone for the next 10 years.
